Payday Loans in Ontario

A payday loan is a short-term loan that’s usually repaid from your upcoming income.

People may consider one when they’re temporarily short for an essential expense — perhaps a car repair, utility bill or another cost that can’t easily be pushed to the next paycheque.

Payday loans are an expensive way to borrow, so consider the cost and your ability to repay before accepting one.

Ontario payday loans are generally for amounts of $1,500 or less.

But $1,500 is the maximum, not an amount every applicant can borrow.

Ontario also limits the amount a payday lender can advance to 50% of the borrower’s net pay. Your actual available amount can therefore be lower and remains subject to the lender’s assessment.

The maximum cost of borrowing is currently $14 for every $100 borrowed.

Here’s what that looks like:

You BorrowMaximum CostTotal Repayment
$100$14$114
$300$42$342
$500$70$570
$1,000$140$1,140
$1,500$210$1,710

For example, borrowing $500 at the maximum permitted cost means a borrowing cost of $70 and a total repayment of $570.

Your loan agreement should show the actual cost before you accept.

You can apply for $500, but requesting that amount doesn’t mean you’ll automatically receive it.

Your income, eligibility and the lender’s assessment determine the amount that may be available.

Before accepting $500, remember to look at what you’ll repay — not just what you’ll receive.

You can apply for an amount up to $1,500, but the maximum isn’t automatically available to everyone.

Ontario’s income-based borrowing restriction still applies, along with the lender’s eligibility requirements.

Borrowing less can also make the repayment easier to fit into your next budget.

Applying Online

Yes. OntaCash lets you start application online from phone, tablet or computer.

You don’t need to visit a storefront simply to submit an application.

Yes. OntaCash’s online application is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

That means you can apply in the evening, early in the morning or over the weekend.

Keep in mind that 24/7 applications don’t mean guaranteed 24/7 approval or funding. Review and verification may still be required.

Yes. You can submit an application on Saturday and Sunday.

Actual review and funding times can vary depending on verification, lender processing and banking factors.

The online application is designed to be straightforward.

You’ll need to provide some basic personal, income and banking information. How long the complete process takes will depend partly on your application and whether additional verification is required.

Rather than rushing, make sure the information you enter is accurate.

Raise it as early as you can, ideally before the payment date passes. Missed payments can add cost and affect your credit record, so early contact genuinely matters.

Requirements can vary, but applicants will generally need to provide information about their:

  • Identity and age
  • Ontario residence
  • Regular income
  • Canadian bank account
  • Phone number and email

Additional information and verification may be requested depending on your application.

Traditional faxing generally isn’t part of the online application process.

However, “no faxing” doesn’t mean “no verification.” A lender may still need information or documentation to verify your application.

No. The OntaCash application can be started online.

That’s useful whether you’re applying from Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Windsor or elsewhere in Ontario.

You can submit your OntaCash application at night.

Whether an approved loan can be processed and funded at that time depends on the lender and any verification required.

Apply 24/7 and guaranteed funding 24/7 are two different things.

Repayment & Your Rights

Your repayment date will be stated in your loan agreement.

Before accepting, check:

How much you’re borrowing → What it costs → Total amount due → Repayment date

Don’t accept until you understand all four.

Ontario payday lenders must accept permitted full or partial prepayments without charging a prepayment penalty.

Check your agreement for the available payment methods.

Contact your lender as soon as you know there may be a problem.

Waiting until a payment fails can make the situation harder to manage.

Your agreement should explain what happens in the event of default and any charges that may apply.

Yes. Ontario borrowers generally have two business days to cancel a payday-loan agreement without penalty and without having to provide a reason.

Follow the cancellation instructions provided with your agreement.

Using another short-term loan to repay an existing one can create a difficult borrowing cycle.

Ontario also prohibits payday-loan rollovers. You cannot simply roll the amount owed on one payday loan into another payday loan from the same lender before the first is repaid.
